Fertility & IUI

For many families, the childbearing year begins long before a positive pregnancy test. Our fertility care spans from individuals just beginning to explore their conception options to those seeking holistic fertility support to regulate cycle and determine optimal conception timing and families ready to conceive through IUI at home.

Our Stats

Sometimes families planning home births will transfer to hospital based care during labor. In large studies and in our practice, emergency homebirth transfers make up 1% of all home birth transfers (read more here), and the rest are for non-medical causes like exhaustion or non-emergent medical indications. Here are our transfer statistics from 2021 and for the past four years in our practice to get a better sense of how we provide care.

Fees

A hospital birth in the Philadelphia area costs between $15,000- $30,000. Home birth is typically 1/3rd to 1/6th the cost, however in the United States is poorly covered by insurance. This reflects the values of our larger health systems towards personalized, family-centered, high quality midwifery care.

We do everything we can to make midwifery care as accessible as possible. That includes early pay discounts, repeat client discounts, discounts for medicaid eligible and low income families, and bartering for some of the cost of midwifery care. We will provide paperwork to submit to your insurance for reimbursement at the completion of care. We have built pay it forward pricing into our home birth midwifery fee to subsidize caring for lower income families.

Insurance & Payments

We accept cash, check, credit cards, HSA/FSA, and payment from Health Share Ministries. Due to state regulations we are not able to bill any Medicaid plans in PA or NJ. We charge an additional $300 transportation fee for clients located more than 45 minutes away from West Philadelphia.

Some insurance companies will reimburse some of the cost of out-of-hospital birth with a Certified Professional Midwife, and some don’t. A great place to start is calling your insurance company to inquire about benefits (check out our guide for calling your insurance here). At the completion of care, we will provide you with a superbill to submit to your insurance, or you can contact our biller STM billing to have them submit to your insurance.

Discounts

We offer Discounts $2,300 discount off of the home birth fee to any family that’s medicaid-eligible for pregnancy medicaid (income limit $37,000 individual, $46,932 with a partner, increases with children). We offer the same discount for solo parents and teen parents.

We also offer an early pay discount, repeat client discount, and accept partial barters for goods and services. Our current barter interests include (but aren’t limited to) home renovation related services, auto mechanics, bodywork, art, CSA or meals, etc.

The Philly Birth Fund

The Philly Birth Fund was created at the start of the pandemic to provide grants to Black families who were unable to afford a home birth when many people were changing their birth plans to outside of the hospital.
